Kents Hill Park pupils were left in awe, when during a visit to the school by Open University geologists, they learned that millions of years ago MK was once under water, had been sited at the southern edge of the ice shelf and had previously been a desert.

These were just some of the amazing facts that the geologists, from the OU’s School of Environment, Earth and Ecosystem Sciences, shared during a detailed and fascinating presentation to the primary school pupils.

The presentation was part of a workshop, which also gave the children the opportunity to get involved in lots of hands on activities, including analysing rocks under microscopes and examining the equipment used by geologists to study the solid earth and organisms.

“We were thrilled that the geologists were able to bring to life the origin of rocks and soils, which our pupils have been studying as part of their current topic,” said Kents Hill Park Headteacher, James Pilgrim.

“The children were intrigued by the scientific evidence that the geologists brought with them and were excited in hearing all about their work in the field. They identified an unknown rock that the pupils presented to them and were also able to inform the children about the history of it.

“The geologists praised the class for their own knowledge and for their searching questions.”
