Middleton in Top 7% of Primary Schools in the Country for Teaching Phonics

Middleton Primary School staff and students have been congratulated for their outstanding achievement in the government’s 2018 phonics screening check, by the School Standards Minister, Nick Gibb, MP.

In a letter sent to the school, the Minister enthused that he was delighted to see that 96% of pupils at Middleton are reaching or exceeding the pass mark, which places them in the top 7% of all primary schools in the country.

He wrote that the schools success in teaching phonics and early reading effectively means that Middleton’s pupils are developing a firm foundation in reading.

The government’s annual phonics screening check, which was introduced in 2012, is designed to assess whether pupils aged 5 – 7 years are making sufficient progress to enable them to become fluent readers.

Delighted to receive the Secretary of State’s letter in recognition of Middleton’s work in this area of children’s early education, Headteacher Rachel Roberts said:

“We are thrilled that the tremendous hard work of our pupils and teaching staff has been acknowledged. It is vital that children learn the basic skills of decoding in phonics for early reading, which will hopefully encourage them to go on to become avid lifelong readers in the future.

“Our aim at Middleton Primary School is to provide our pupils with the best education and range of opportunities possible to ensure that they reach their full potential.”
